Racial Healing Workshop

Engage in transformative racial healing through our Diocesan Workshop, fostering empathy and understanding in a lifelong spiritual journey.

Introduction

The diocesan Repairers of the Breach committee has designed a Racial Healing Workshop to help address racism in our church and the larger society, as well as to comply with resolution 2000-B049 Required Anti-Racism Training, adopted at the 73rd General Convention. For a period of time our diocese was out of compliance with respect to racial healing training requirements. We are thankful that our diocese can now join others in the Episcopal Church in this important step towards Becoming Beloved Community.

While we encourage all to take this workshop, there are specific individuals and groups within the diocese who are required to complete it. Those individuals and groups include search committees, vestries and leadership boards (Standing Committee, Commission on Ministry, Executive Board, among others), diocesan staff, church staff, and clergy.

As Repairers of the Breach co-chair Charles Farrar said in the  Repairers of the Breach presentation  at Annual Council in 2023, this workshop was designed in consultation with Dr. Catherine Meeks, Founding Executive Director of the Absalom Jones Center for Racial Healing and is set in the context of our Baptismal Covenant and the Eucharist, as well as our diocesan initiatives. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on individual experiences with race and its impacts, explore the stories we’ve been taught (and not taught), and recommit to a holy healing journey. The workshop is a vital piece of our lifelong spiritual formation, our identity as followers of Christ, and is at the heart of the gospel’s call.

The diocese will maintain a database of all individuals who have completed the workshop, which will include name, home church, date of completion, and ministry setting.
