Camps and Conference Centers

Chanco on the James

Chanco on the James is a residential youth camp and retreat center supported by the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia.  Located in Surry County on 125 beautiful acres next to the James River, Chanco is the perfect location for church or company retreats, family gathering, or special events.  Motel-style rooms or home-like lodges allow for large and small groups to gather, conduct business or join in faith services.  For information about Chanco’s retreat and conference services, contact Stacey Richards at Chanco on the James at 1-888-724-2626, hospitality@chanco.org.

Camp Chanco is Chanco on the James’ residential summer camp for boys and girls 8 -17 years old.  Rustic cabins, outdoor pavilions, and new and exciting activities provide for summer experiences and friendships that last a lifetime.  Swimming, sailing, canoeing, archery, nature studies, games, zip lines, ropes course and other attractions provide youth with an opportunity to learn, grow and have fun in the process.  Summer out-trips sponsored by Chanco also allows older youth the opportunity to try rock-climbing, white-water rafting, horseback riding, surfing and lots more.

Camp Wakonda

For the past fourteen years, Camp Wakonda, a specialty camp supported by the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia,  has been dedicated to providing a camp experience to children infected or affected with HIV/AIDS.   Camp Wakonda is the only camp of its type in the country offering kids a no-charge, camping opportunity supported entirely by volunteers.  If you can support Camp Wakonda in any way (contribution, volunteer), please contact the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia or Boyd Duncan at bduncan4@cox.net.

UPDATE: Help for Camp Wakonda!!!!

We are recruiting camp counselors for Camp Wakonda.  Counselors should be at least 18 years old and available for the period June 23-27, 2010 (camp hours are approximately 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM).   If possible, counselors should be available to spend Friday night (June 25) at Camp Chanco as the Camp Wakonda kids will be spending the night there (for many, this will be the first overnighter at camp).  Individuals with Red Cross lifesaving certification are needed, but there are lots of opportunities for others who want to work with children 6-16 years of age.  If you are not available for the entire period, but want to volunteer, contact us anyway.  We’ll work with you.

We also need the following items to support the camp; several First Aid kits as well as some athletic supplies such as hula hoops, jump ropes, rubber footballs, and soccer balls.  All donations are appreciated.

For information, contact Boyd Duncan, 850-1520 or bduncan4@cox.net.
