The Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia’s Ridley Foundation awards more than $100,000 to students.
The Ridley Foundation Board of Trustees announced the recipients of scholarships for the 2009-2010 school year. More than $100,000 in scholarships were awarded to college and seminary students in the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia.
This year 75 student recipients plus 13 seminarians from around the region including Blackstone, Danville, Courtland and Virginia Beach received scholarships. Among the winners were more than 30 new applicants and 47 previous awardees plus seminarians who received scholarships for the 2009-2010 school year. Student winners receive educational assistance ranging from $300 to $3,000. Among the winners are students enrolled in colleges and universities including University of Virginia, Elon University, Old Dominion University, Hampden Sydney College, Sewanee University, St. Paul’s College, Thomas Nelson Community College and many others.
The Ridley Foundation is managed by a board of trustees whose purpose includes the provision of scholarships to worthy students. This wonderful opportunity for students in our diocese was made possible by Miss Roberta Ridley, a native of Southampton County, who bequeathed to the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia in 1952, property and assets to be used for the benefit of youth for advanced education. Scholarships are based on academic excellence and financial need.
